Currencies

Any currency can be used in building and calculating a budget, supporting projects filmed in one or more foreign countries.

Default Currency

The default currency for new, blank budgets is the USD (United States Dollars) with a symbol of $ and a rate of 1.00000.

Currency Settings

  • Open a budget and click the Cur (currency) setup option
    • Or press CTRL + 6 on a PC or CMD + 6 on a Mac
  • Select which currency is your Base Currency
    • Base currency assigns what currency Rate to use for any detail lines with no explicit currency added
  • Select which currency to display your Totals & Subtotals
    • This determines the rate by which the system calculates a Total/Subtotal if the display currency doesn't match the rate currency used in that line item
    • This also determines the symbol and separator pattern for any Total/Subtotal in the budget

Changing Base Currency

If you change your Base Currency your detail lines that do not have an explicit currency assigned will automatically have their subtotal recalculated based on the new Base Currency.

For example, assume the Base currency was USD at a 1.00000 rate, the subtotal is displayed in USD, and there is a line item with a rate of 100 in Base Currency (i.e., it assumes it is $100). If you update your Base currency to GBP at a 0.75000 rate, then that line in base currency now assumes it is £100 and would therefore display a subtotal of $75.

Add a New Currency

  • Open a budget and click the Cur (currency) setup button
    • Or press CTRL + 6 on a PC or CMD + 6 on a Mac
  • Click to + ADD CURRENCY
    • Or select a row and press CTRL + i on a PC or CMD + i on a Mac
  • Click to select and enter the CURRENCY CODE for your new Currency
    • A code is required for any Currency
    • When you start typing the system will recommend global currencies from a pre-defined list
    • Select any of these currencies to automatically fill in some of the following details
  • (Optional) Add a DESCRIPTION and SYMBOL for your Currency
  • (Optional) Select the JUSTIFY checkbox to have the currency symbol appear after the value
  • (Optional) Select a separator pattern
    • By default Movie Magic Budgeting assumes a comma (,) for the thousands separator and a period (.) for the decimal separator
    • You can select to use a period (.) for the thousands separator and a comma (,) for the decimal separator when displaying totals or subtotals in a currency
  • Assign the RATE to establish the calculation of this currency as compared to other currencies
    • Rate is usually the current or expected exchange rate for the currency in relation to the Base Currency. The Rate field will retain five digits after the decimal point (e.g. 1.00000).  If fewer than five digits are entered, zeroes will be added to fill all five decimal places.

Delete a Currency

  • Select the row to be deleted.
  • Click on the DELETE CURRENCY button
    • Or press CTRL + D on a PC or CMD + D on a Mac

If the selected Currency is in-use somewhere in your budget, you will be warned that this may cause errors in your budget. If you are sure, select Delete Currency to confirm.

The selected Currency will be deleted from your budget and your totals recalculated based on this change. Detail lines will now assume they are using the Base Currency and so your subtotals and totals will change.

For example, assume your Base Currency and Totals Currency are USD at a rate of 1.00000, and you have GBP as an additional currency at a rate of 0.75000. If a line in your budget is for £100 it will calculate to $75. If you delete the GBP Currency from your budget, that line item would now assume it is $100 and the total changes by +$25.
