Below is a list of Movie Magic Budgeting releases to date and the primary features they include. Thank you to our many users who have provided suggestions and made requests.

Version 10.30.17 (Jul. 01, 2025)

  • Column Resizing
    • Resize columns more efficiently with improved flexibility, including a new flex space on the right to maximize visibility.
    • Double-click any column border to auto-adjust the columns accordingly.
    • Eliminate the need to manually adjust each column to achieve the desired view.
  • Column Separation for Improved Visibility
    • Vertical lines now separate each column for enhanced clarity on both the main screen and comparison tables.
    • Improve budget visibility by clearly distinguishing between columns for better data organization.
  • Ellipsis Menu Enhancements
    • Access the column configuration menu conveniently on the left, ensuring it remains accessible during resizing.
    • Available across the main screen, comparison tables, cloud file management, and reports for consistent column management.
  • Budget Comparison Updates
    • Position the base budget on the left or right to align with preferred workflows.
    • Expanded abbreviated column names, such as "Variance" instead of "Var" and "Average" instead of "Avg," for improved clarity and consistency.
    • Customize base budget placement to simplify comparisons between feaure budgets, episodic budgets, and scenario budgets.

  • Real-time Budget Editing and Comparison
    • Leverage the interactive compare screen to support real-time editing and real-time comparison in the cloud — refreshing linked budgets show live views, replacing Movie Magic Budgeting 7’s static report.
  • Compare Up to 15 Budgets Simultaneously for Episodic Projects
    • Allow up to 15 budgets to be compared against a primary budget, ideal for episodic projects.
    • Enable studios to compare sub-budgets against a projected series total budget for episodic budgeting.
  • Budget Comparison Report Customization and Legibility
    • Display more columns by repeating account numbers on subsequent pages when there are too many columns to fit on one page.
    • Allow titles to wrap to two lines for better readability.
    • View only the base budget by removing all compare budgets.
  • Find Function
    • Eliminate the need for manual selection of account numbers when using the find function.
    • Toggle the find function to use the last used search criteria (Control/Command+F) and search by account number (Control/Command+J)

Version 10.27.68 (Oct. 10, 2024)

  • Performance Improvements for macOS
    • We've resolved a performance issue affecting Apple Silicon MacBooks (M1, M2, and newer ARM-based). The application is now built as a "universal" version, supporting both ARM64 and x64 architectures, ensuring smoother performance on all macOS devices. This release includes updates to the build process that combine both ARM64 and x64 versions before notarization, leading to improved compatibility and performance on Apple Silicon devices.

Version 10.27.60 (Sept. 19, 2024)

  • Export Multiple Cloud Budgets
    • Select and export multiple Cloud Budgets in bulk.
    • Receive all files in a single .zip file.
  • Export Movie Magic Budgeting 10 Local File
    • Export an MMB10 local file directly from the File menu.
    • Access this export option without navigating the Export dropdown.

Version 10.27.47 (Aug 8, 2024)

  • Save Local Files and New Manage Budgets Screen
    • Saving local files is a long-awaited parity item with legacy versions of Movie Magic Budgeting. Save budgets to your device. Open, edit, and share them from there.
    • A Manage Budgets screen supports this feature. The screen is a home page for your most recent files. The ON THIS DEVICE tab shows local desktop files. The MY CLOUD tab shows cloud-hosted files.
    • Create local files from cloud files with an export option.
    • Find file icons that denote a locally saved (on this device) budget or cloud icons that represent a cloud-hosted budget.
  • Double-click to Open Specific Files
    • Double-clicking .mmbx, .mbt, or .mdb files will open them no matter which operating system you use, making it easier to access supported files.
  • Update Recently Opened Menu on Save
    • If you open a local file while auto-save is off, the budget will only display with other recently opened files after a manual save.

Version 10.26.8 (Feb 8, 2024)

  • Group Priorities
    • You can now select up to 20 Groups to have "priority" when deciding which color a line should have.
    • This lets you identify important Groups applied to lines without having to remove and re-add them to get the most important Group color to show.
  • Navigate to next Category
    • Switching to the previous or next account using shortcut keys now continues to the previous or next category once you reach the end of the current category.
    • Same for switching account detail pages when you reach the end of the current account.
  • Improved Error Handling
    • We've improved messaging if MMB cannot open a budget because the file data has been damaged (outside of MMB's control).
  • MMB7 Export Unicode Cleanup
    • We've fixed a rare issue that made some files inoperable when exported to MMB7 due to pasted values that MMB7 does not support.

Version 10.25.20 (Nov 2, 2023)

  • Disable Autosave
  • Updated Navigation Bar
    • The Navigation Bar has been updated to take up less space and focus on the controls you need immediate access to.
  • Import and Export Improvements
    • You can now import and export your budgets in the new Movie Magic Budgeting .mmbx format. This export format retains all the data in a New MMB10 file (as opposed to exporting in MMB7 format, which will lose data that MMB7 doesn't support).
    • You can now export MMB budgets in a JSON format for easier parsing by some programs and systems. The data included in this export is the same as our XML (Advanced) export.
  • Improved Installer & Update Experience
    • When installing MMB10, additional guidance is available to ensure the application is installed correctly and provide feedback if we encounter an issue.
    • MMB10 will usually try to update itself automatically. In cases where the update fails to complete, we will now display a message with guidance on manually updating the app.
  • Calculation and Export Fixes
    • Fixes for some uncommon issues with calculations and exports to MMB7 format.

Version 10.24.56 (Jul 27, 2023)

  • Improved Non-Adjacent Selection
    • Select multiple, non-adjacent "groups" of cells using click & drag, then pressing CMD on a Mac or CTRL on a PC while you click and drag the next section.
  • Improved Copy/Paste
    • Paste copied cells into more than one target cell.
    • Currently supports adjacent target cells.
  • Drag Copy works on all cells
  • Identity First Sign In
    • MMB will now ask you for your email before asking for your password during sign in.
    • Logging in to MMB is only required the first time you install the application on a new computer, or if you switch back and forth regularly between different computers.
  • Report Improvements
    • Tags in the Cover Page, Header, or Footer are now colored purple for Budget Info, green for Globals, and brown for Reference Tags.
    • The final value will still be displayed in black text.
    • Tags that are not supported in MMB7 will be converted to their values when exported to the legacy .mbd format.

Version 10.24.15 (Jun 8, 2023)

  • Budget Info
    • You can now store data about your budget in Budget Info, such as Title, Season, Start Production Date, and other custom fields.
  • Cover Page
    • Build a Cover Page with assumptions, comments, remarks, or other data.
    • You can even insert data from your Budget Info, Globals, or Reference tags, so you don't have to retype them when they change!
  • New Exports
    • You can now export your budget to a Microsoft Excel file, including things like the new Budget Info fields, as well as Fringes, Groups, Globals, Sets, and Locations for each detail line.
    • Added a new XML (Advanced) export for better machine-readable data.
    • The "XML (Detailed)" export wad re-titled to "XML (Basic)" for those who still need the old export as-is.
  • Miscellaneous Improvements
    • Issue resolved where Windows was not properly displaying PDF files in your target folder when trying to save a report.
    • Issue resolved where Flat Rate Fringes were not exported correctly to MMB7 if your BASE and CONV currency differed.
    • Adjustments made to prevent rare budget syncing issues.

Version 10.23 (Feb 2, 2023)

  • Improved Sub-Budget Creation
    • The logic in Sub-Budget creation has been simplified and the option to keep or remove lines "without" a tool has been expanded, making Sub-Budgets more predictable.
  • Column Selections Stick
    • Visible columns and their widths now save and display on a per-budget basis. Expect the same layout each time you re-open or share.
  • Charges/Credits Ordering
    • Charges and Credits on the Topsheet will now follow the order they have been organized in on the Setup screen.
  • Miscellaneous Improvements
    • Hide unnecessary ("empty") subtotals in reports and Sub-Budgets
    • More safeguards to prevent rare cases of data loss
    • Selecting Totals (bottom of an account) to allow paste/insert at the end
    • Selecting Totals & other read-only lines for better copy/paste outside MMB
    • Find & Replace now only replaces the specific text you searched for in a Description field
    • Use ENTER or ESC to commit/cancel choices in dialogs

Version 10.22.14 (Nov 3, 2022)

  • Allow spaces in Description Field
    • The Category Description, Account Description, and the Description at the detail level now accept leading spaces & multiple spaces for better formatting.
  • Alphanumeric COA support for Fringe Accounts
    • The Chart of Accounts now supports alphanumeric coding (for example 1A00), especially where Fringe accounts are concerned (for example 1A99).
  • Fixed intermittent issues with copy/paste
    • Issues with copying / pasting have been resolved, primarily where the copied selection was "forgotten" before the user had pasted it.
  • Removed Tool Visibility ("eyeball") option from all tools
    • The Tool Visibility option (the "eyeball" checkbox in the Setup screen) has been removed. Now all tools will appear and be available at all times within the budget. This prevents unintended problems when certain tools were hidden.
  • Performance Improvements
    • Additional performance improvements and technology updates have been included in this release. Performance lags on very large budgets have been cut in half.
  • Split Screen Improvements
    • Additional stability improvements around split screen and multiple open budgets prevent rare issues where budget data was mixed up or lost.
  • Improve Units Export to MMB7
    • Export logic has been improved so that important Units are not dropped by MMB7, improving the accuracy of budgets being passed back and forth between MMB7 and MMB10.
  • Fix issue with pasting when multiple rows selected
    • Pasting while multiple rows are selected now properly pastes the data above the entire selection.

Version 10.21 (Sep 1, 2022)

  • Open Budget Changes
    • Imported budgets now land in your currently selected project
    • One budget is clearly selected whenever you switch project folders
    • Budgets that have not been opened in 6 months are now "offloaded" to the cloud to improve performance.
      • Open a budget or click the cloud icon to sync it to your current device.

Version 10.19 (Feb 3, 2022)

  • Improved Cell Editing
    • Long calculations are made visible in a flyout when editing that cell.
    • The cursor remains visible when editing a cell wider than the column.
    • Type-ahead selections (e.g., for Globals or Units) have been cleaned up.
  • Better Error Handling
    • Cells with imported or unexpected calculation errors are now clearly visible with red highlighting and an #ERR message.
    • The sign-in page has been improved to avoid some common authentication issues.
    • Network errors (like Error 500) have been reduced.
    • Error details are reported more clearly to the user or our team.

    • Select All now works as expected in the budget or setup screens.

  • Undo / Redo History
    • A visual log showing the history of your recent actions is now available.
    • You can revert to any recent action without having to undo each step.
    • Actions in the Setup table can now be undone or redone.

    • We previously patched to include a "suppress" option for empty accounts when generating a Topsheet report.
    • Empty accounts are now defined so Reports and Sub-budgets can be created that ignore untouched accounts.
    • Based on user feedback, we’ve updated the Backspace/Delete key behavior so it now "clears" cells rather than deleting the entire row (unless the full row is selected).
    • The app's responsiveness to quickly scrolling and clicking has been improved to avoid unexpected behaviors.

  • Major Report Update
    • The new Category Summary report gets you the Account totals for your Categories.
    • Category Summary & Account Detail reports will now hide unnecessary totals.

    • Group Colors updated to be easier to see and more consistent on import/export.

  • Unique Budget Names
    • We're now much more consistent in requiring unique names so your copied or imported budgets do not get confused with each other.
  • Improved Rates Fields
    • We've cleaned up issues preventing you from typing a decimal without a leading 0.
    • Negative values will now be displayed in parentheses.

Version 10.15 (Jul 29, 2021)

  • Protected % Unit
    • The Percent Unit (%) is no longer editable and duplicate Percent Units cannot be created.
    • This cuts down on errors caused by unintended duplicate Percent Units.
  • Notes Report
    • The Notes Report is now easier to read.
  • Miscellaneous Stability Improvements
    • We've made a number of fixes to improve overall performance and stability, including adjusting the networking standards we use to increase compatibility with corporate & studio networks.

Version 10.14 (Jul 1, 2021)

  • Improved Keyboard & Mouse Navigation
    • We've made some significant changes to the way you navigate, select, and edit cells so you can more quickly and easily work on your budgets.
      • At least one cell is selected and active at all times.
      • Start typing to overwrite the active cell.
      • Double-click or press F2 to edit an active cell without overwriting.
  • Send a Copy Improvements
    • "Share" is now called "Send a Copy" for additional clarity.
    • You now get an email and see in-app notifications whenever a budget copy is sent to you.
  • Apply Fringe/Group hot key
    • Use CTRL + 1 on a PC or CMD + 1 on a Mac to start Applying Fringes.
    • Use CTRL + 2 on a PC or CMD + 2 on a Mac to start Applying Groups.
    • You can use the ARROW keys and SPACE to navigate and apply or remove.
  • Miscellaneous Enhancements
    • Open Budget: Double-click anywhere on a budget name to open it; select a budget and click "Edit" to rename.
    • Fringe Account Coding: When posting fringes by Category you can now customize the Account code used (e.g., "99" to display 1099 for category 1000).

Version 10.13 (May 6, 2021)

  • Syncing & Performance
    • We've improved back-up syncing and overall performance to better handle offline work, users switching devices, and large budget files.
  • Find & Replace
    • Single Character: You can now search for tools that are only a single character or start any search with just the first letter.
    • Numerical Searches: Improved accuracy and now supports searching in your base currency format.
    • Clarifying Fuzzy Matches: We now make your search results easier to read with bolded search terms, better ordering, and paginating large result sets.
  • Cleared up confusion with your Library
    • We've removed the "cloud" terminology (but not the functionality) around your library. Your library is always available, even offline, and you can copy tools to or from any budget. Your data is always backed-up to our secure cloud when online.
  • Subtotal Adjustments in Sub-Budgets
    • Subtotal adjustments now follow the same rules as any other detail line so you can include them in any sub-budget.

Version 10.12 (Mar 24, 2021)

  • Session & Change Feature
    • Session Amount: MMB now displays the total dollar amount by which the budget has changed since it was last opened, or since the tracker was last Reset.
    • Change Amount: MMB displays the dollar amount of the most recent change.
    • Reset: Clears both the Session and Change amounts.
  • Shortcuts: Custom Shortcut/Hotkeys
    • You can now assign a custom hotkey to quickly insert or apply shortcuts in your budget using the keyboard. Assign up to 10 hotkeys to different shortcuts.
    • Quick Navigation: Auto-Select Exact Match
    • When Finding Categories & Detail Accounts (CMD/CTRL + J) an exact account match will select that result and navigate you to the account automatically.
  • Apply Fringe: Fringe Total Amount
    • The Fringe Total Amount is now shown in the Fringe Apply tab when you have a line highlighted.
  • Filter By Applied:
    • Applied to some: If you have more than one line selected and have “Filter Applied” checked for a tool, any tool that is only applied to some of the lines is now displayed (and is marked with a dash for “indeterminate state”).
    • Fringe, Group, & Location Totals at the Topsheet & Account Level: Select “Filters Applied” or “Filter In-Use” for Fringes, Groups, or Locations to see the values and totals for the selected lines in your budget.

Version 10.11 (Feb 16, 2021)

  • Custom Sort and Search for Categories & Tools
    • This new feature will allow you Drag & Drop your Setup Categories and Setup Tools in any order you like and it will be retained in the budget. You also have the ability to sort specific columns by ascending and descending order.
    • You now have the ability to Drag & Drop your Apply tools and custom sort them in any order you like.
    • Within the Apply Window you can search for tools.
  • Quick Navigation Included in “Find” Apply Tab
    • You can now easily jump to Accounts in the budget by clicking CMD / CTRL + J and typing in the Category or Account number you would like to go to.
  • Print & Report Setup Update
    • “Print” button included so you can now quickly print your report and you can skip the step of saving the report as a .pdf.
    • “Vertical Lines” option has been added to the Report Setup so you can now visualize column lines in the Report.

Version 10.9 (Jan 11, 2021)

  • Updated Sub-Budget (Groups Options)
    • The new options allow you to include/exclude Suppressed Groups and Detail lines without Groups applied in your sub-budget.
  • Shortcut Key Updates
    • Updated to include shortcut keys for Credits and Contractual Charges.
    • Updated to include multi-line and multi-cell highlight using the keyboard.
  • Detailed XML Export Update
    • The Detailed XML has been updated to include more detailed information on Fringes in the budget.
  • Print & Report Setup Update
    • Additional “Notes” report added to the “Additional Reports” list in the “Included Section.”
    • This feature has been updated to make the Header and Footer setup buttons more clear.
  • Contractual Charges / Credits Setup Update
    • Complete overhaul of both setup screens to be more responsive and streamlined.
  • Main Budget Footer Includes Budget’s Credit Total
    • You can now reference the budget’s credit totals in the footer no matter where you are in the main budget.

Version 10.8 (Dec 7, 2020)

  • Updated Shortcuts
    • This new feature allows you to view two dfferent budgets in split-screen. You can now compare and copy/paste data between different budgets with ease.
  • MMS6 .MBL Import
    • This feature allows our users who work with MMS6 to import .mbl file and copy/paster the Elements from their schedule into their budget.
  • Click & Drag: Entire Column Highlight
    • You can now easily highlight multiple rows by clicking and dragging the first column of any level in the main budget.
  • Print & Report: Update to Display of Fringes
    • The .PDF report has been updated to show the total Fringes in more detail.
  • Main Budget Footer Includes Budget’s Credit Total
    • You can now reference the budget’s Credit totals in the Footer no matter where you are in the main budget.
  • All Setup Categories Support Up/Down Keyboard Navigation
    • Within the left-rail Category window in all Setup Windows you can now use the Up and Down keyboard keys to navigate through the Category list.

  • Split-Screen Two Budget View
    • This new feature allows you to view two dfferent budgets in split-screen. You can now compare and copy/paste data between different budgets with ease.
  • Update to Units Column at Detail Level
    • All Unit columns at the Detail level will now utilize the singular and plural when there is a value of other than 1 in the Amt, X, Rate and 4X entered.
  • Budget Tab Overflow and Budget Setup Tab Styling Update
    • We have updated the user interface styling to handle multiple budget tabs open at once and updated the Budget Setup tabs to be more clearly defined.
  • Direct Movie Magic Support Link In-App
    • Within the new “Help and Tutorials” window you can access the Production Community Movie Magic Support page which features documentation and the option to live chat directly with our support agents.

  • Mouse Drag (Highlight)
    • This new feature allows you to easily highlight and cut/copy groups of data in the main budget area.
  • Report Setup: Font Size Preferences
    • New reporting option will provide the ability to decrease the font size of a report to fit more data on the page or increase the font size of the data to make it more readable.
  • Bulk Copy/Paste Multiple Cells
    • This ability lets you quickly copy or cut data in bulk and paste it into the same budget or a completely different budget.
  • Copy/Paste Data To and From Excel
    • Transfer data to and from Excel with this new copy and paste feature, available in any of the main budget levels.
  • In-App Help Window
    • Easily access how-to videos for Movie Magic Budgeting from within the application. You need to be connected to the internet to use this feature.

Version 10.5 (Jul 23, 2020)

  • Include 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Unit Columns at Detail Level
    • This new feature allows you to add more unit columns at the detail level.
  • Budget Comparison Report
    • New report will allow the user to customize and export their budget comparison in PDF format.
  • Click & Drag Highlighted Cell to Replace Content
    • You can now quickly and easily copy over content of a cell to multiple cells in the same column by clicking the square in the bottom right corner of the cell and dragging it up and down.
  • Include Charges Anywhere in Topsheet
    • This feature will you to setup charges exactly where you would like in your topsheet.
  • Import Existing .mbt Template File
    • You now have the ability to easily import template files from MMB 7 (.mbt) into the new application as a budget.
  • Ability to “Bold” Rows in Budget
    • This feature will allow you to make certain rows in your budget stand out in both the main budget UI and reports.

Version 10.4 (Jun 18, 2020)

  • Insert Row at Detail
    • You now can now set what columns at the detail level you would like to be copied to the next row when a new row is created.
  • Multi-Select Upload/Download
    • New feature will allow you to upload multiple setup tools from your budget to the cloud at one time.
  • “Dec” Setting Fixed
    • In Globals Setup, you can now set the “Dec” cell to the number of decimals you would like to show for that specific global, making reports cleaner by not showing unnecessary values.
  • Exclude “0” and “1” from $0 Subtotal Rows
    • This new reporting default will make reports cleaner because unnecessary values are removed and not shown.
  • Group Color and Row Shading Options
    • New ability to customize the look and feel of a report by removing the alternating shaded rows as well as adding color text to groups.
  • Persisted Changes to Reports

    • The “Exclude Dropdown” will allow you with checkbox options to remove specific lines from your budget for cleaner reporting. These options include Suppressed Groups, Zero Total Accounts, and Empty Accounts.
